Zone 2 Cardio: The Easy Pace That Builds Real Fitness
Updated September 10, 2026 · 6 min read
Zone 2 cardio is exercise at an easy, conversational pace — roughly 60–70% of your maximum heart rate — where you're working but could still hold a conversation. Despite feeling easy, it's one of the most effective ways to build your aerobic base, heart health and endurance, and it's gentle enough to do often without burnout or injury. That makes it ideal after 40 and a perfect fit for low-impact training: brisk walking, incline walking, cycling, rowing or the elliptical all work. The simple test: you can talk but not sing. Aim for about 150 minutes a week, in sessions of 30–60 minutes. Most of your cardio should live here — easy, steady, and sustainable.
“Zone 2” is the fitness world's favorite buzzword right now — and for once the hype is deserved, especially if you want results without wrecking yourself.
What is zone 2 cardio?
Heart-rate zones run from very easy (1) to all-out (5). Zone 2 is the easy-but-purposeful pace — about 60–70% of your max heart rate — where your body trains its aerobic system efficiently. The beauty is that it's low-stress, so you can do a lot of it without breaking down.
Why is it so effective after 40?
Builds your aerobic base — the foundation of stamina and heart health.
Low injury risk — easy enough to do often.
Fat-burning and blood-sugar benefits.
Zero-impact friendly — walking, cycling, rowing all qualify.
How do I find my zone 2?
The simplest test: the talk test — you can hold a conversation but not sing. If you have a heart-rate monitor, aim for roughly 60–70% of your estimated max (about 220 minus your age). It should feel like a 5–6 out of 10.
How much to do
Aim for about 150 minutes a week, in sessions of 30–60 minutes. Brisk walking, incline walking, cycling and rowing are all perfect, zero-impact ways to get it.

Brisk walking is often right in zone 2 for many people, especially with a slight incline. Use the talk test: if you can chat but not sing, you're likely there.
How often should I do zone 2?
Most of your cardio can be zone 2 — it's low-stress, so 3 to 5 times a week is fine. Aim for around 150 minutes total across the week.
