Water Aerobics: Benefits and What a Class Looks Like

Updated September 5, 2026 · 6 min read

Water aerobics is exercise done in a pool, where the water's buoyancy removes almost all impact on your joints while its resistance strengthens your muscles. It's a genuine cardio workout, ideal for arthritis, extra weight, or getting back in shape — and you don't need to know how to swim, since classes are held where you can stand.

In the water, your body weighs almost nothing — so you can move, strengthen and get your heart rate up without ever stressing your joints. That's why water aerobics is a favorite after 50.

The benefits

What a class looks like

A typical class runs about 45 minutes: a warm-up (walking in water, mobility), the main set (leg and arm movements against the water's resistance, sometimes with pool noodles or foam dumbbells), then a cool-down and stretches — usually to music and in a group.

Who it's for

It's ideal for arthritis, back pain, extra weight, seniors, and anyone easing back into exercise. No swimming ability required — most classes take place in shallow water where you can stand.

How to get started

Check your local pool, YMCA or community center for "water aerobics" or "aqua fitness" classes. Bring a swimsuit and a water bottle — yes, you still sweat in the pool.
