Exercises for Seniors at Home: No Gym, No Equipment

Updated September 5, 2026 · 7 min read

You can cover everything that matters at home with no equipment beyond a sturdy chair: strength (sit-to-stands, wall push-ups), balance (single-leg stands), and mobility (gentle rotations). A simple weekly plan of 3 to 4 short sessions keeps seniors strong, steady and independent — no gym, no cost, no commute.

Home is the ideal place to exercise after 60: no commute, no crowd, no cost — and no excuses. All you need is a chair and a little space.

What you need

A stable chair, a non-slip floor, and comfortable clothes. Optional: a resistance band (a few dollars) to add challenge later. That's it.

The core home exercises

A simple weekly plan

  1. Mon: strength (legs + core).
  2. Tue: mobility + a walk.
  3. Wed: strength (upper body + balance).
  4. Thu: rest or morning mobility.
  5. Fri: full-body short routine.
  6. Weekend: a walk for pleasure.

Staying safe at home

Clear the space of trip hazards, keep the chair or a counter within reach for standing moves, and go at your own pace. The rule stays: it can challenge you, it should never hurt.

Check with your doctor before starting if you have a condition, and stop if you feel dizzy, breathless or sharp joint pain.
