Exercises for Lower Back Pain: Gentle Moves That Relieve

Updated September 5, 2026 · 7 min read

For most lower back pain, gentle movement relieves better than rest. The exercises that help restore mobility and strengthen the core and hips that support the spine: pelvic tilts, knee-to-chest, cat-cow, bird-dog and glute bridges. Avoid heavy lifting and anything that sharpens the pain, keep moving through the day, and see a doctor for red-flag symptoms.

Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints after 40 — and one of the most responsive to gentle movement. Bed rest is out; smart movement is in.

Move, don't rest

Prolonged rest stiffens the back and weakens the muscles that support it. Staying gently active — walking and doing the moves below — usually speeds recovery for ordinary back pain.

What to avoid

Build a stronger back

Once the acute pain settles, regular core and hip strengthening, plus walking, is the best insurance against future flare-ups.

See a doctor urgently for back pain with leg weakness, numbness in the groin/saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or pain after a fall. These need immediate care.
